Klaatu: The Band Everyone Thought was The Beatles

Being that recently was the 50th anniversary of The Beatles’ final concert together, one can remember the controversy of the 70s. Who is Klaatu? Are they The Beatles? Why the name Klaatu? What type of prog nonsense have The Beatles gotten themselves into?

In 1976, an album surfaced by a band named Klaatu. The album, 3:47 EST, contained 8 songs, the first and last being 5 minute plus prog epics. When listening to this album, a couple of things come to mind. First, the vocals sound eerily like Paul McCartney’s and John Lennon’s. The drums almost sound like Ringo’s drumming style. Why does this sound so familiar? Are we just so keen on The Beatles that we can’t get them out of our head? Or is this band The Beatles? Have they created a new band from themselves to show off a new style? How come all of the songs are only credited to Klaatu? What does this mean?

To make a long story short, it doesn’t mean anything. This was just a group of Canadian prog rockers who left their names out of the credits so people would only focus on the music. The sad part is that they only achieved commercial success because people thought they were The Beatles.

Here’s to Klaatu, the prog rock enigma lost to time.
